Growing food in our garden is not only healthy but also gives a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Herbs are very easy to grow and are the powerhouse of medicinal benefits. They have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiobesity, and antiviral properties that have healing benefits for our bodies.

A pinch of salt makes our food taste gut.
But if we could add some herbs into it, then our food would taste better.

I would like to share my simple way of making my Herb-Salt.

Ingredients:

100 g Sea Salt / Rock Salt
1 T Rosemary (dried and crushed)
1 T Thyme (dried and crushed)
1 T Oregano (dried and crushed)
1 T Sage (dried and crushed)

Procedure:

This herb salt is very simple. I just mix my crushed dried herbs in my salt in a glass container. To mix them, I just shake my salt container thoroughly and my herb sea salt is done.

I use this salt mixture for cooking noodles, marinating fish- and meat recipes.

To make a fine herb salt, I just put the salt mixture in a salt grinder. I can then garnish my soup or salad according to my taste.

Tip:

  • You can mix any herbs of your choice with your preferred salt.
  • You could put this homemade herb-salt in a decorated container. Then you could gift it to your friends and loved ones.

How to harvest herbs?

Harvest your herbs when they are strong and before they flower. After they flower, most herbs tend to lose their flavor or become bitter. Use clean and sharp scissors. Harvest them before noon time or during sunset and if they are dry.

Harvest the herb by cutting the stems 3-4 inches from the base of the plant. Harvest herbs with long stems like parsley and oregano by cutting the stem near the base of the plant. Harvest rosemary by cutting stems above a pair of leaves and it will branch out and continue to grow.

How do I dry my herbs?

I just air dry my herbs in a place that is not direct to sunlight.
I put them in a try rack thinly or make a small bouquet and hang them.
After 3 weeks the herbs are dried. I just crush these dried herbs and remove the hard parts and store them in a glass container.

Herbs Benefits:

Here are some benefits we got from the following herbs.

Of course, we should not take too much of these herbs at once because they might cause some side effects. As a standard rule, anything that is too much is not good.

Rosemary

Studies have shown that the carnosic and rosmarinic acids in rosemary have powerful antibacterial, antiviral, and anti fungal properties. Consuming rosemary regularly can potentially help lower the risk of infection and help the immune system fight any infections that do occur.

Thyme

Thyme also contains a variety of minerals and vitamins that promote good health. Thyme is full of vitamin C for immune support, potassium for healthy cells, and manganese for bone development and blood clotting.

Oregano

Fresh oregano is a great antibacterial agent. It has phytonutrients (thymol and carvacrol), which fight infections such as staph. It’s loaded with antioxidants that help prevent cell damage, and it’s an excellent source of fiber, vitamin K, manganese, iron, vitamin E, tryptophan, and calcium.

Sage

Sage is very high in vitamin K, and it also contains vital minerals like magnesium, zinc, and copper.
